The Duel in the Crown
For many players and observers of the game of golf, match play, player against player, head to head, is the purest form of the sport.
Drama, tension, excitement, match play is the duel in the crown of golf and the World Match Play Championship, inaugurated in 1964 is the very embodiment of that classic challenge.
The roll of honour, the past champions who have emerged victorious from the white heat of eight rounds of championship golf over just four days reads very much like golf’s hall of fame.
Echoes of the past place Palmer, Player and Nicklaus alongside the golden generation of European golf and the legendary Seve Ballesteros, six-time ‘Major’ champion Nick Faldo, almost inevitably that prolific winner Colin Montgomerie and the man who almost made the championship his own, seven-time winner Ernie Els.
But all that is now in the past as the rejuvenated Volvo World Match Play Championship relocates to Spain, whilst retaining the traditional autumnal date and that magical match play format.
Finca Cortesín in Andalucía, Spain welcomes 16 of the best golfers in the world for the first time in the fall of 2009, the highest-ranked players from the world’s five continents amongst those to qualify as of right, as is the Volvo China Open champion.
“An excellent match play course,” was three-time ‘Major’ winner Padraig Harrington’s verdict after test-driving the course, whilst the elegant clubhouse and magnificent five-star hotel are perfect for the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
