Volvo China Open – the open golf championship of China

When Volvo took those first few pioneering steps into professional golf in China back in the early 1990s, the number of golf courses could be counted on the fingers of one hand, professional golfers on the fingers of two hands.

But, with the inauguration of the Volvo China Open in 1995 and a continuous programme of organic development, the number of golf courses in play or under construction is close to 500, a million-plus golfers playing regularly on golf courses and driving ranges from Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, Shanghai to the east and Nanjing to the west.

Golf in China is now a truly national sport, soon to enjoy further investment from the public and private sector following the sport’s readmission into the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Hence, the Volvo China Open, which joined the European Tour in 2004 and this year carries a prize fund of US$2.5million is set to grow in size and significance, with players from all over the world of golf keen to follow in the footsteps of past champions like Paul Casey and Jeev Milkha Singh.

The 2010 Volvo China Open, the 16th successive staging under Volvo’s stewardship, and, like true open championships, it has pre-qualifying events and moves around the country, takes place at the magnificent Gary Player-designed Jinji Lake International Golf Club in the garden city of Suzhou, where Australian star Scott Strange will head a star-studded line-up in defence of the title he won a year ago in the Olympic city of Beijing.
